Our History

The origin of LC Nature Park is rooted in the Brooks family’s shared passion for nature and the abundant beauty of Indiana. Once Chief Big Leg’s Reservation, in modern times the property has been the family homestead of John & Carol Brooks. Many memories were made cooking indoors and out, telling stories around the fire pit, and exploring the lands, all to the soundtrack of laughter and joy.

Over the years, the unique geological, botanical, and historical features of the property came to light, and the family became inspired to transform the land into a private park. The festivities continued, but with a greater purpose taking shape, and the property has since enjoyed the stewardship of expert naturalists and conservationists, with education for generations to come as its guiding mission. 

Carol, a woman with a lovely and engaging spirit, who enriched the lives of all who knew her, passed away in 2017. The Brooks family decided to name the new park in her honor. The LC in LC Nature Park stands for Loving Carol, and the park is a beautiful, living tribute to the woman who helped inspire the preservation.

LC Nature Park seeks to protect and restore the historic area, providing a meaningful way for students of all ages to observe the variety of native plants and animals. It aspires to encourage the joy and discovery a person can find in their own backyard, providing unique opportunities that open eyes and generate wonder, creating memorable times and fostering a convivial spirit between family and friends through natural outdoor education. Experiencing the beauty of the natural world reduces fear of the unknown, increases awareness of the complexity and interrelationship of life, and brings profound, long-lasting appreciation for the opportunity to enjoy it.
