Background

  • Bison and elk are two of the largest and most charismatic megafauna found in North America. As mammals, they have a lot in common. Bison and elk can both be found living in the same grassland habitat. They are both herbivores and have similar diets. However, bison selectively graze on warm-season grasses found in prairies. Elk browse on a broader diet, which is mostly grasses but they also consume an array of flowering plants and spring buds of woody plants. However, there are some important distinctions between them. For example, bison have horns that grow their entire lives and are not shed. While elk, like their cousin the deer, have antlers that are shed and regrow every year.

Program Outline

  • Students will first spend time walking through the Education Center observing the displays.

  • Students will then make their way to the amphitheater for a brief introduction to the activities for the day, review the expectations for the Park and program, and information about the lesson will be provided.

  • After the lesson, we will then go for a hike to locate the bison and elk so we can observe them in their natural environment.

  • We will then find a place where we can observe them without bothering them. Then, we will have a conversation about their specific characteristics and adaptations and that help them grow, survive, and reproduce.

  • Activity: We will compete in the Bison Olympic Games where we see how we stack up against elk and bison in events like running and jumping.
