Fall at LC Nature Park

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, LC Nature Park transforms into a breathtaking autumn wonderland. The changing leaf colors paint the landscape in vibrant hues of gold, amber, and crimson, offering visitors a visual feast as they wander through the park’s trails. The cooler weather invites both humans and wildlife to relish the season, with gentle breezes carrying the scent of pine and fallen leaves. Whether you're watching for wildlife at the Mills Educations Center, joining one of our guided hikes, or taking a ride on the safari bus there's a magic in the air that only fall can bring.

One of the best experiences of autumn at LC Nature Park is hearing the haunting bugle of elk. As the rutting season peaks, our resident elk's clear, resonant calls echo through the park, captivating anyone lucky enough to hear them. These majestic animals, now adorned with impressive antlers, are more active than ever. It’s a season of high energy for them, and we encourage guests to take part in one of our elk-spotting tours to experience this annual spectacle.

Another iconic fall experience at LC Nature Park is the migration of birds. Overhead, the sky becomes a highway for countless species making their journey south for the winter. From the calls of geese in perfect V formation to the flutter of smaller songbirds, this natural phenomenon is a reminder of the cyclical rhythms of life. Morning visitors are often treated to a silver fog that lends a mystical quality to the park, as mist dances over the ponds and through the trees.

Autumn also brings the excitement of field trips to LC Nature Park. Schools from across the region visit to explore the changing ecosystem and learn about the native wildlife. Children delight in spotting the bison herd grazing the prairie and the elk watching from the woods. Our hands-on educational programs engage students with the wonders of the natural world, providing memories that last a lifetime.

In addition to the natural beauty, we have a host of fall events lined up for visitors of all ages. On October 12 we will have our Big Birding Day and Oak-Tober Trees event, which invites nature enthusiasts of all types out to the park for a day of learning and exploration. Our last Fireside Friday offers a cozy spot to gather, with drinks, live music, and an opportunity to relax by the fire with friends. National Bison Day is November 2, and you won’t want to miss this much-anticipated free event featuring self-guided hikes, interactive programs, food trucks, and more.

Whether you're here to immerse yourself in the beauty of the changing season or to take part in one of our signature fall events, LC Nature Park is the perfect place to enjoy everything that autumn has to offer. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the park at this special time of year, when nature puts on its grand finale before winter’s arrival.
