The Pitter Patter of Little Hooves

Elk Calves at LC Nature Park

After hiding in the protective cover of the forest with their mothers, four elk calves have emerged to join the herd on LC Nature Park’s 50 acres of restored grassland. This brings the total number of babies born at the park this year to 4 (13 over the last 3 years), and the herd now numbers 20 individuals.

Female elk, known as cows, find a safe location to deliver their calves each spring and remain with their newborns for about two weeks before rejoining the herd. The forests adjoining the park’s grassland are the perfect spot for these special deliveries.

Elk weigh only about 35 pounds at birth, but grow quickly as they feed on mom’s nutritious milk. Only male calves will develop antlers, but that won’t occur until next year once the male calves have a year under their belts.
