Sounds of Nature

Overview

  • In this program, we will learn about the all that is going on in the Park.

  • We will take a quiet hike through the Park and observe nature.

Objectives

  • To learn about the activity that happens in the Park by simply and quietly observing the beauty and wonder of nature.

Vocabulary

  • Observation

  • Investigation

  • Mimic

  • Noise Pollution

Background

  • Throughout our everyday lives, we are bombarded by so much noise. Noise from others, our phones, tv, and traffic. So much so that our brains block most of it out and we do not even hear it anymore.

  • What we want to do with this program is to just sit with intention and purpose, relax, and just “be” in nature. In nature there is not any “noise pollution.” There are not people talking all the time, there are not any cars zooming past, and there is not any music or the tv.

  • By sitting quietly and listening, we can hear the wind, the birds singing to one another, the squirrels arguing over who found the acorn first, the water in the creek running over the rocks, the sound of bison grazing on the grass, and the wind rushing through the branches of the trees.

Program Outline

  • Students will first spend time walking through the Education Center observing the displays.

  • Students will then make their way to the amphitheater for a brief introduction to the activities for the day, review the expectations for the Park and program, and information about the program will be provided.

  • After the brief introduction, we will make our ‘ears’ for the second part of the program and then head to our observation site.

  • We will then find a place where we can have a conversation about the floral characteristics and/or adaptations and how they help plants survive.

  • Activity: Silent Hike, Sound Map, and graphing the number of times they hear a particular sound.
